How Merkur Transformed Onboarding with Simplicity and Scale
In retail, efficient onboarding is essential. For MERKUR trgovina, one of Slovenia’s major home improvement retailers, the task was clear: train over 1,200 employees across 24 locations without straining HR operations or compromising training quality.
Over time, Merkur moved from manual onboarding to an automated and structured system. The goal was to make onboarding consistent and help new employees become productive more quickly.
From Six-Month Cycles to Onboarding in Minutes
As Robert Rajterič, Head of Merkur’s Knowledge Academy (Merkurjeva Akademija Znanja), explained in our recent webinar, onboarding used to take months. A single training cycle for all retail staff could last six months. Digital tools changed that, and Merkur shifted from paper-based systems and in-person sessions to short, accessible training modules.
The main changes included:
- Converting key training, such as safety and compliance, into digital formats
- Automating training paths based on employee roles
- Linking training progress with employee records
- Integrated tools, unified experience
Connecting the Gecko HRM platform and Smart Arena learning management system helped Merkur streamline training. When a new employee starts, tasks and courses are assigned automatically. Managers can monitor progress and give timely support. The process does not require manual tracking or additional reporting.
